Stonegate Ministry History

Stonegate Community Ecumenical Ministry (SCEM) was founded in 1991 by a group of committed individuals and Christian faith communities from Humber Bay Area. They came together to develop a shared vision, to play an active and relevant role in reaching out to the Stonegate community, and to minister to people's social and spiritual needs.

This joint ministry of Anglican, United, Presbyterian and Baptist churches has continued since the inception of the ministry. Hope for Tomorrow Foursquare Gospel Church joined the ministry in 2004 and our most recent member Lambton Kingsway United Church joined the ministry in 2009. Volunteers from the local Roman Catholic Churches are actively involved in the Ministry's projects.

The core clientele for SCEM's work are the tenants who live in 79 low-rise apartment buildings at Stonegate, a community just north of The Queensway and Parklawn Road, in the Etobicoke - South area of the GTA. The area has a population of nearly 12,000 people, most of whom earn low incomes, and many families are headed by a single parent. A large segment of the neighbourhood population are new Canadians, recently arrived in Canada.

SCEM is faithfully supported by a family of church communities, which regardless of the denominational differences remain united in one Spirit and one heart. Together, we are expanding God's glorious kingdom and becoming relevant and truthful body of believers impacting the Stonegate community with God's awesome and redeeming love in Christ Jesus.
